When the single debuted at number 66 on the Billboard country chart dated November 13, 1993, it began a twenty-week run that carried it to number 2 by February 19, 1994, where it was held off the top by John Michael Montgomery's "I Swear". The track also peaked at number 25 on the Canadian RPM charts. Written by Keith Hinton and Jimmy Alan Stewart, "A Little Less Talk and a Lot More Action" had first been recorded by Hank Williams Jr. on his 1992 album Maverick before Toby Keith cut it a year later for his self-titled debut album. His version came out in November 1993 as that record's third single.
The song arrived early in a career that had already seen Keith's first single, "Should've Been a Cowboy", top the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart in 1993. He went on to collect 42 top 10 country hits, including 33 number ones, across 19 studio albums that sold more than 44 million copies worldwide. In 2005 he founded the label Show Dog Nashville, later Show Dog-Universal Music, and he received the National Medal of Arts from President Donald Trump in January 2021.
A music video put Keith on stage in a bar setting with a band. Directed by Michael Merriman, it was filmed at Chastain's in Oklahoma City and featured the original members of his Easy Money Band. Keith died from stomach cancer on February 5, 2024, and was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame that same year.
