Apollo 440 were at work on their second studio album, Electro Glide in Blue, when they built a single around a piece of American rock history. The English electronic group took a sample of the lead guitar line from Van Halen's 1978 song "Ain't Talkin' 'bout Love" and turned it into "Ain't Talkin' 'bout Dub", released in February 1997 by Stealth Sonic and Sony Records as the album's second single. The track also borrowed a sample from the 1971 science-fiction film The Andromeda Strain for its opening.
The single fared well across Europe. It reached number one in Romania and landed within the Top 10 in Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden and the UK, peaking at number two in the latter. A remix-heavy release strategy followed, with the 12-inch vinyl carrying four versions, including a Matrix remix and a Booby Trap remix, while the two CD singles added further treatments from names such as Armand Van Helden and Joey the Butcher.
The front cover carried its own story. It featured a photograph of Member of Parliament Jeremy Thorpe holding Jimi Hendrix's Gibson Flying V guitar backstage at a Jimi Hendrix Experience concert at the Royal Festival Hall in 1967. A music video directed by James Brown premiered in February 1997 to accompany the release.
