The Eagles have played "Already Gone" live since the 1970s. A performance filmed in Australia is on the 2005 Farewell 1 Tour DVD.

Jack Tempchin and Robb Strandlund wrote it. Tempchin, who had already written the Eagles' "Peaceful Easy Feeling", mailed Frey a tape of the song. The band recorded it early in the sessions for On the Border, after they left London for Los Angeles and switched producers from Glyn Johns to Bill Szymczyk. Frey sang lead. New guitarist Don Felder played a Les Paul Special and supplied the solo lick.

Asylum Records released On the Border on March 22, 1974, with "Already Gone" as the opening track. The first single came out in April, backed with "Is It True". It peaked at number 32 on the Billboard Hot 100 on June 29, 1974, and stayed on the chart for 15 weeks.

Already Gone runs at 144 BPM, the tempo of dubstep and trap counted in half time, and hardstyle. In classical terms it sits in allegro territory. A bar of 4/4 lasts 1.67 seconds, and a quarter-note delay is 417 ms. It is in G major, Camelot 9B, which shares its notes with E minor and mixes cleanly with C major and D major.
