American Idiot

Billie Joe Armstrong began writing "American Idiot" after hearing the Lynyrd Skynyrd song "That's How I Like It" on his car radio. Its message of redneck pride struck him as exactly what he was against, and he set out to answer it. The song took shape as one of two explicitly political tracks on the Green Day album of the same name, the other being the single "Holiday". Its central claim was that mass media had orchestrated paranoia and idiocy among the American public.

Armstrong drew on cable news coverage of the Iraq War, recalling journalists riding in tanks with soldiers and delivering play-by-play reports. He felt American news had crossed the line from journalism into reality television, cutting violent footage together with advertisements. His bandmate Mike Dirnt believed many listeners would feel insulted by the track until they recognized it as a call for individuality rather than a song of finger-pointing anger. Dirnt imagined its blunt language, juxtaposing "faggot" and "America", would give a voice to the disenfranchised.

The song's format and cadence borrowed from the Midnight Oil song "US Forces", which Armstrong discovered through his wife. When it came to recording, he was initially reluctant to record a guitar solo, fearing it would come across as corny. He went ahead with it anyway, hoping the album would feel like being fifteen and rocking out in front of a mirror.
