The music video for "Are You Gonna Go My Way" picked up a Best Male Artist award at the 1993 MTV Video Music Awards, one of several nominations the song and its clip earned that season. Directed by American filmmaker Mark Romanek, the video placed Lenny Kravitz and his band in a large circular arena with three tiered balconies of dancing people. Lighting designer Michael Keeling built a chandelier of 983 cylindrical incandescent light tubes, originally designed for aquarium use, which could be dimmed and brightened to make patterns of light above the performers.
Cindy Blackman appeared on drums in the video, although she did not play on the studio recording used for its audio track. Released by Virgin Records in February 1993 as the first single from Kravitz's third album of the same name, the song was written by Kravitz with Craig Ross and produced by Kravitz himself.
The single topped the Australian chart for six weeks through April and May 1993, reached number four in the United Kingdom, and hit number one on the US Billboard Album Rock Tracks chart while peaking at number two on the Modern Rock Tracks chart. Because it was released as an airplay-only single in the United States, it was not eligible for the Billboard Hot 100. In Brazil it became the only diamond-certified single in the country, surpassing 500,000 downloads. The song was later covered by Metallica, Tom Jones, Robbie Williams, Mel B, Cactus Jack and Adam Lambert.
