Tracy Chapman wrote "Baby Can I Hold You" for her 1988 debut album, and in October of that year Elektra Records put it out as the third and final single from the record. The single reached number 48 on the Billboard Hot 100, a placement that made it her last American top-50 hit until "Give Me One Reason" arrived in 1996.
