Alice DeeJay were riding the momentum of "Better Off Alone" when they returned with their next single, "Back in My Life", released in November 1999. The Dutch group had the track produced by Wessel van Diepen, Dennis van den Driesschen, Sebastiaan Molijn and Eelke Kalberg, the production team known as Pronti & Kalmani. It appeared as the second single from their album Who Needs Guitars Anyway?.
The single performed strongly across Europe. It reached number one in Norway and landed in the top 10 in Finland, Ireland, the Netherlands, Sweden and the United Kingdom, where it peaked at number four after its 22 November release there. In Scotland it climbed to number two. On the US Dance Club Play chart it reached number 27. In certain countries it came close to matching the success the group had enjoyed with "Better Off Alone".
Two music videos were made for the track. One featured full funeral scenes, while the other was filmed on a cliff top and contained more dancing. Both gave the single a visual presence as it spread through European charts in late 1999 and beyond.
