Paul Rodgers and Simon Kirke wrote "Bad Company," Rodgers as the group's lead singer and Kirke on drums. They took the meaning of the title from a book on Victorian morals. The song came out on the band's 1974 debut album, also called Bad Company. Rodgers said it had an almost biblical, promised-land kind of lawless feel.

The band itself was an English supergroup formed in London in 1973. Rodgers and Kirke had both been in Free, and they were joined by Mick Ralphs, formerly of Mott the Hoople, and Boz Burrell, formerly of King Crimson. Only Kirke stayed through the entire run. He and Ralphs were the only members on every studio album. Peter Grant, who managed Led Zeppelin, managed them until 1982.

Their first three albums, Bad Company, Straight Shooter in 1975 and Run with the Pack in 1976, all reached the top five in the album charts in both the UK and the US. Bad Company has sold 20 million RIAA-certified albums in the US and 40 million worldwide. They disbanded in 1982, though they reunited on many occasions afterward.

Bad Company runs at 112 BPM, the tempo of pop, funk and disco-leaning dance. In classical terms it sits in moderato territory. A bar of 4/4 lasts 2.14 seconds, and a quarter-note delay is 536 ms. It is in Ab major, Camelot 4B, which shares its notes with F minor and mixes cleanly with Db major and Eb major.
