Sam Kinison dominates the more famous of the two videos for "Bad Medicine" by Bon Jovi. It opens on a crowd of young people waiting in line to get into the shoot. A security guard asks if there are any questions, and Kinison wants to know whether the video will be the same video slop that comes from these glam rock pretty boys. The guard says yes. Kinison rallies the crowd to hijack the cameras and make a better Bon Jovi video than the band could. The crowd gets hand-held cameras and an invitation onstage to help film. In an alternate cut, Kinison holds photos of celebrities with the mouths cut out so he can impersonate them while promoting the band. The other video shows the band live in concert.
Jon Bon Jovi, Richie Sambora and Desmond Child wrote the song. Mercury Records released it on September 12, 1988, as the lead single from the fourth album, New Jersey. Bruce Fairbairn produced it. It reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100, the band's third single to do so, and made the top 10 in Australia, Canada, Finland, Ireland, the Netherlands and New Zealand.
Bad Medicine runs at 117 BPM, the tempo of pop, funk and disco-leaning dance. In classical terms it sits in moderato territory. A bar of 4/4 lasts 2.05 seconds, and a quarter-note delay is 513 ms. It is in A major, Camelot 11B, which shares its notes with F# minor and mixes cleanly with D major and E major.
