Bodies

Guitarist C.J. Pierce came up with the riff for "Bodies", and vocalist Dave Williams responded by singing "let the bodies hit the floor" over it. The rest of Drowning Pool built the song around that hook. Williams explained on Uranium that the lyrics described what he saw looking out at the moshpit, a place where listeners could leave the week's frustrations at the door, though he stressed that the pit had a code and that anyone knocked down had to be picked back up. The lyrics were deliberately kept vague so that listeners could form their own interpretations.

The song first appeared in an earlier form on the band's EP Pieces of Nothing, where the bridge lyrics were missing and the screaming was far more prominent. The finished version was released in May 2001 as the debut single from Sinner, the album Drowning Pool recorded with Pierce, drummer Mike Luce, bassist Stevie Benton and Williams. It climbed to number 6 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock Tracks chart and reached number 34 in the UK. Radio stations pulled it briefly after the September 11 attacks because of the nature of the lyrics.

The song counted up from one to four, shouting each number, before arriving at the chorus, where the repeated "let the bodies hit the floor" line carried most of the weight. Clean verses contrasted with harsher vocals elsewhere, and Pierce's guitar work leaned heavily on the wah pedal. An early version of "Bodies" had already hinted at the band's appetite for screaming, but the album recording tightened it into something radio could play.
