On the first day of rehearsals for Leftoverture, Steve Walsh told the band he had nothing. That left Kerry Livgren to supply nearly all the material for Kansas's fourth album. Livgren said he did not relish that pressure, but in hindsight it brought out the best in him. Based in Atlanta, the band had gone back to its hometown of Topeka to rehearse in a vacant store in a strip mall. Livgren worked up his songs on a Lowrey organ at his parents' home.
"Carry On Wayward Son" was the last to arrive. Livgren told the band to hear it on the last night in Topeka. He saw it as autobiographical, a song of self-encouragement from a man on a spiritual search. Drummer Phil Ehart said they did not expect a hit, since it ran about six minutes. In December 1976 their manager called to say it was climbing the charts.
Leftoverture came out on October 21, 1976, and the November 23 single was a 3:26 edit of the album track. It debuted at No. 86 on the Billboard Hot 100 dated December 25, 1976, and peaked at No. 11 on April 2, 1977. It was certified gold in 1990 and quadruple platinum in 2019.
Carry On Wayward Son runs at 123 BPM, the tempo of house, disco and most club dance music. In classical terms it sits in allegro territory. A bar of 4/4 lasts 1.95 seconds, and a quarter-note delay is 488 ms. It is in G major, Camelot 9B, which shares its notes with E minor and mixes cleanly with C major and D major.
