Check Yes or No

George Strait recorded "Check Yes or No" at Emerald Sound Studios in Nashville on April 10, 1995. He had wanted the song from the moment he first heard it, telling CMT that he knew right away he wanted to cut it. His toddler son, he added, was a big fan as well. The track went on to top both the U.S. Billboard country chart and the Canadian RPM country chart, spending four weeks at number one after debuting at number 63 in late September 1995.

The song came from two Nashville songwriters, Danny Wells and Dana Hunt Black, for whom it was the first of their songs to be recorded by a major artist. Black had developed the chorus a year before moving to Music City but kept it to herself until a songwriting session with Wells at the ASCAP offices, where she shared the idea and the two began building the song together. An original demo later appeared on the 2010 compilation The Original Songwriter Demos Volumes 1 & 2.

Written as a story of two schoolchildren passing love notes and flirting on the playground, the song shifts in its second verse to the narrator celebrating two decades of marriage. Released in September 1995 as the lead single from the box set Strait Out of the Box, it earned both CMA and ACM Single of the Year awards. It also appeared as a bonus track on the UK version of the 1996 album Blue Clear Sky.
