"Creep" was the seventh track on Core, the 1992 debut album from Stone Temple Pilots, and the third and last single released from it. The band had formed in San Diego in 1989 with Scott Weiland on vocals, Eric Kretz on drums, and the brothers Dean DeLeo on guitar and Robert DeLeo on bass. They started out as Swing, became Mighty Joe Young, and took the name Stone Temple Pilots after signing with Atlantic Records.

The song is a ballad. In a November 2014 interview with Songfacts, Weiland described what it was about: being a young person somewhere between still being a kid and becoming a young man. He called it youth apathy, a second-guessing of oneself, and not feeling like a fit.

A live version of "Creep" with Aaron Lewis is on The Family Values 2001 Tour release, and the studio recording is on the greatest hits album Thank You.

Creep runs at 107 BPM, the tempo of mid-tempo pop, dancehall and indie. In classical terms it sits in andante territory. A bar of 4/4 lasts 2.24 seconds, and a quarter-note delay is 561 ms. It is in E minor, Camelot 9A, which shares its notes with G major and mixes cleanly with A minor and B minor.
