Erick Sermon and Rockwilder produced "Da Joint," the lead single from EPMD's fifth album, Back in Business. The track arrived a week ahead of the album itself and carried extra weight for the group, since it was the first release by the newly reformed EPMD since their 1992 single "Head Banger". A new chapter, then, beginning with a single that also sometimes went by the spelling "The Joint".
The single performed solidly at retail, selling approximately 100,000 copies in its first week. It climbed to number 94 on the Billboard Hot 100, which made it EPMD's second and final single to reach that chart. For a duo returning after a long gap between releases, that was a respectable showing.
Plans for the music video went through a change behind the scenes. Hype Williams was originally lined up to shoot it, but those plans never materialized. The job instead went to Steve Carr, who directed the finished video. The single marked both the group's return and their last appearance on the Hot 100.
