Patrick Stump wrote the bass line of "Dance, Dance" on an acoustic guitar, drawing on David Bowie's "Modern Love". The lyrics came from a collaboration between Pete Wentz and Bryce Wong, who has worked with Kanye West. In 2013 a fan asked Stump on Twitter which of his work he was proudest of, and he named it as probably the best thing he had ever done.

It was the second single from From Under the Cork Tree and reached number nine on the Billboard Hot 100 in January 2006. It was Fall Out Boy's second consecutive top ten hit after "Sugar, We're Goin Down". It crossed over, reaching number two on Alternative radio and number five on Pop. In the UK it peaked at number eight. It was certified 6x platinum in the US in August 2025.

The song won Viewer's Choice at the MTV Video Music Awards and two Teen Choice Awards. Alan Ferguson directed the video at Salesian High School in New Rochelle, New York. The band plays at a homecoming dance while also attending it as nerdier versions of themselves. Ben Jorgensen of Armor for Sleep and Travie McCoy of Gym Class Heroes make cameos, and Katrina Bowden dances with Stump.
