Paul Stanley had the basic riff for "Detroit Rock City", the "get up, get down" part, but he did not know what the song was about except that it was about Detroit. He and producer Bob Ezrin wrote it for Kiss, and it came out on their 1976 album Destroyer. Stanley explained in 2023 that Detroit embraced the band before any other city. They were an opening act everywhere else and a headliner there.

Kiss once played Charlotte, and someone on the way to the arena was killed in an accident. Stanley thought how bizarre it was that a person heading to something so life affirming lost their life. The song praises Detroit and also follows a fan who does not make it to the show.

Gene Simmons played an R&B-influenced bassline that he considered a departure from his usual style. Kiss had formed in New York City in 1973, and its members performed in face paint and stage outfits.

Detroit Rock City runs at 184 BPM, the tempo of fast punk, speed metal and hardcore. In classical terms it sits in presto territory. A bar of 4/4 lasts 1.3 seconds, and a quarter-note delay is 326 ms. It is in F major, Camelot 7B, which shares its notes with D minor and mixes cleanly with Bb major and C major.
