Brandon Boyd has described the lyric of "Drive" as being about fear, being driven by it all of one's life and making decisions from it, and imagining life without it. Incubus released it on November 14, 2000, as the third single from Make Yourself.

It was the band's breakthrough. "Drive" reached the top of the Modern Rock Tracks chart on March 3, 2001, and No. 9 on the Hot 100 on July 28, 2001. It also reached No. 4 in Portugal, No. 13 in New Zealand, No. 34 in Australia and No. 40 in the UK, and won Modern Rock Single of the Year at the 2001 Billboard Music Awards.

Phil Harder directed the video, based on M.C. Escher's Drawing Hands. A simple band performance is intercut with a rotoscoped animation of Boyd drawing himself, handled by Boyd and drummer José Pasillas. The live scenes were shot at the McNamara Alumni Center at the University of Minnesota. It lost the Best Group Video nomination at the 2001 MTV Video Music Awards to NSYNC's "Pop." In 2023, streams of "Drive" jumped after it appeared in an episode of the Netflix series Beef.

Drive runs at 90 BPM, the tempo of hip-hop, R&B and reggaeton. In classical terms it sits in andante territory. A bar of 4/4 lasts 2.67 seconds, and a quarter-note delay is 667 ms. It is in E minor, Camelot 9A, which shares its notes with G major and mixes cleanly with A minor and B minor.
