After its release, the BBC placed "E Talking" on its list of "Songs that shaped dance music," crediting the Belgian duo Soulwax with bringing electronic body music into the mainstream and praising them for merging punk, electro, techno, indie and classic rock into something that could not be pigeonholed. The track, issued on 17 January 2005 as the second single from the album Any Minute Now, reached number 27 on the UK Singles Chart, the band's highest ever chart placement. A snippet also appeared on their 2005 album Nite Versions, tucked into the pregap as a hidden track.
One of its more curious sonic details came from fellow Belgians: the high pitched electronic sample heard during parts of the song was a modified guitar riff lifted from Lords of Acid's 2001 hit "Scrood Bi U".
The music video was filmed on location at London's Fabric nightclub and directed by Evan Bernard, earning a MVPA Award nomination. It cycled through various club-goers while listing the drugs they were on, working through the entire drug alphabet from A for Acid to Z for Zoloft. Because of that drug content, broadcasters restricted the video to night-time play. The song later found its way into the 2019 film Hustlers.
