Boyz II Men recorded "End of the Road" for the Boomerang soundtrack, with the song written by Babyface, Antonio L.A. Reid and Daryl Simmons. Released on June 30, 1992 by LaFace, Arista and Motown, it arrived after every single from the group's debut album Cooleyhighharmony had already come out, making it their fifth single overall. It did not originally appear on that album, though the record was re-issued in 1992 and 1993 to include it once the single took off.

The climb up the American charts was swift. The single debuted at number 53 on the Billboard Hot 100 on July 18, 1992, moved to number 30 the following week, and reached the top ten a week later. It then peaked at number one, holding the position for 13 consecutive weeks from August 15 to November 7, 1992, a then record broken later that year by Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You". It also spent four weeks atop the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and was the number one single of 1992 on Billboard's year-end list. Overseas, it reached number one in Australia, the United Kingdom and on the Hot 100 Eurochart.

The Recording Industry Association of America certified the single Platinum for shipments of over one million units in the United States. At the 1993 Grammy Awards it won Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals and Best R&B Song. In 1993 a Spanish version, "Al Final Del Camino", was released as a single with producer Rex Salas.
