The Alan Parsons Project cut "Eye in the Sky" for their sixth studio album, with Alan Parsons and Eric Woolfson writing and producing the track together. Woolfson also took the lead vocal, giving the song the voice that carried it onto the album Eye in the Sky in May 1982. On the record, the instrumental piece "Sirius" segues directly into "Eye in the Sky", though the single release presented the song on its own with "Sirius" edited out.
Released as the lead single in several countries, the song entered the US Billboard Hot 100 at No. 85 on 3 July 1982. By September it had reached the top ten, overtaking "Time" as the Project's highest charting entry on that listing. It peaked at No. 3 the following month. The song went further abroad, reaching No. 1 in both Canada and Spain, and it climbed to No. 6 in New Zealand. It became the most successful release of the band's career.
Parsons, who had been the sound engineer on the Beatles' Abbey Road and Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon before forming his own group, earned his first Grammy win in 2019 for Best Immersive Audio Album with the 35th anniversary edition of Eye in the Sky, after 13 nominations. That same year he recorded a Catalan version of the song, "Seré els teus ulls al camí", for a La Marató de TV3 telethon CD raising funds for research into incurable diseases.
