Feel Good Inc.

Damon Albarn wrote "Feel Good Inc." in 2003 while travelling to perform at Coachella with Blur. It was his first time passing through what he remembered as the "amazing windmill valley", a view that inspired the chorus line "windmill, windmill for the land". The windmill imagery also drew partly on William Blake's poem "And did those feet in ancient time", and came to represent a note of optimism, a snapshot of an older and more innocent world. The track began as an upbeat 80s song before moving toward a more acoustic sound.

Released on 9 May 2005 as the lead single from Gorillaz's second album Demon Days, the song featured the American hip-hop group De La Soul. Danger Mouse, a good friend of the group, suggested them for the track and sent it over, and they agreed to fly to London. David Jolicoeur loved the instrumental when Albarn played it to him on the second day of recording and wrote his verse the very night after first hearing it. Kelvin Mercer, busy with the De La Soul song "Shopping Bags (She Got from You)", ultimately did not appear on the record. The distinctive laugh came from Vincent Mason, who was simply laughing at the music happening that day, an idea of David's that Albarn described as mostly an accident.

The single peaked at No.2 in the United Kingdom and topped the US Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart for eight consecutive weeks. It won Best Pop Collaboration at the 48th Annual Grammy Awards in 2006, having also been nominated for Record of the Year.
