Mick Jones wrote "Feels Like the First Time" alone, while putting together the band that became Foreigner. He started writing by himself and soon had two or three songs. This was one of them. It came from a change in his life. He was coming out of a marriage to a woman he had met in France, and he had gone back to England and then made the journey to America while in Spooky Tooth. He remarried and moved to America with his new wife. The song, he said, described that new start.

Lou Gramm sang it at his audition to become the lead singer of Foreigner, along with "Take Me to Your Leader," "At War with the World" and "Woman, Oh Woman." Those same four songs went on the demo the band used to get its recording contract.

The song was released in 1977 as the debut single from the band's eponymous debut album. It reached No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100. The track uses elements of electronic music.
