Two days after "Fix You" appeared on CD in Australia on September 12, 2005, Coldplay put the Fix You EP in the iTunes Store. After Hurricane Katrina, all sales went to the American Red Cross Hurricane 2005 Relief and the MusiCares Hurricane Relief Fund.
The song was the second single from X&Y, released on September 5, 2005. It reached number four in the UK and number 59 on the Billboard Hot 100. It spent 122 weeks on the UK chart by July 2011. All four band members wrote it. Chris Martin developed it to comfort his then-wife, Gwyneth Paltrow, after her father, Bruce Paltrow, died. He wanted a church organ sound. Instead he powered up a keyboard her father had given her that sat unused in their house. He said Elbow's "Grace Under Pressure" influenced it, and bassist Guy Berryman said it took a bit of inspiration from Jimmy Cliff's "Many Rivers to Cross".
Sophie Muller directed the video, filmed after two concerts at the Reebok Stadium in Bolton on July 4 and 5, 2005, the band's first stadium shows. Coldplay played the song at a private memorial for Steve Jobs on October 19, 2011, and at the One Love Manchester benefit concert on June 4, 2017.
Fix You runs at 68 BPM, the tempo of slow ballads, ambient and downtempo. In classical terms it sits in largo territory. A bar of 4/4 lasts 3.53 seconds, and a quarter-note delay is 882 ms. It is in Eb major, Camelot 5B, which shares its notes with C minor and mixes cleanly with Ab major and Bb major.
