Daddy Yankee wrote "Gasolina" in 2003 with Eddie Dee, working with the production duo Luny Tunes. The track appeared on his album Barrio Fino, which came out in July 2004, and it was released as the album's lead single in October 2004. Glory sings the line "dame más gasolina," Spanish for "give me more gas," although she received no credit for her contribution.

The song quickly found an audience. Radio stations took notice, with WSKQ-FM in New York City reporting it in their top 10 rotation by November 6, 2004, and WRTO-FM in Florida calling it their most-played track. Daddy Yankee introduced the video on MTV's Total Request Live on November 4, and the single entered the US Billboard Hot 100 a week later, reaching number 32 on January 28, 2005. It peaked inside the top 10 on some of the other charts it entered, and in the UK, released there on July 4, 2005, it eventually earned a Silver certification in March 2019. Australia saw it climb to number 12 in late January 2006.

The single was nominated for the Latin Grammy Award for Record of the Year, the first reggaeton song to receive that nomination. In 2023, the Library of Congress selected it for preservation in the United States National Recording Registry as being culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant. Daddy Yankee shot the video in Santo Domingo, at the Autodrómo Internacional de Las Américas motorsports track and in the Zona Colonial.
