"God Is a DJ" began with a T-shirt. The band guitarist Dave Randall wore one to rehearsal carrying the words that gave Faithless their title and the core of the lyric, and the group built the song from there. Writing credits went to Maxi Jazz, Rollo, Sister Bliss, and Jamie Catto.
The single came out on 24 August 1998 as the lead release from Faithless's second studio album, Sunday 8PM. It reached number six in the United Kingdom and topped the US Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart in September of that year. In early 1999, Billboard reported that many people involved with dance music believed the track deserved a Grammy nomination for Best Recording of 1998.
