In February 2012 the Black Keys sent out "Gold on the Ceiling", the third track on their seventh album, El Camino, as its second single. It came out on February 25 and went platinum in Australia and Canada. It is tied with "Fever" as the band's highest-charting song in the UK.

Two videos were made. Reid Long directed the first, which uses concert footage and candid shots of the band on tour. Harmony Korine shot the second before the single came out, but it was held until May 2012. In it the band members wear Baby Björns and are carried by giant doppelgangers played by two Belmont Bruins basketball players. The cover is a photograph of the run-down south entrance of the former Kaufmann's, later Macy's, at Rolling Acres Mall in Akron, Ohio.

The song was used widely in sports. It was in the "Brackets Everywhere" campaign for the 2012 NCAA men's basketball tournament and was the theme for NASCAR: Race Day on SPEED and Fox Sports 1 from 2012 to 2013. NBC played it in 2012 Summer Olympics broadcasts honoring gold medalists. The Vancouver Canucks, Nashville Predators and UMass Minutemen hockey team use it as a goal song. The band played it at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards with Johnny Depp on guitar.

Gold on the Ceiling runs at 130 BPM, the tempo of techno, trance and big-room dance. In classical terms it sits in allegro territory. A bar of 4/4 lasts 1.85 seconds, and a quarter-note delay is 462 ms. It is in C major, Camelot 8B, which shares its notes with A minor and mixes cleanly with F major and G major.
