Many consider "Hate to Say I Told You So" the signature song of the Hives, the Swedish band formed in Fagersta in 1993. It was the first single from their second album, Veni Vidi Vicious, and came out in Sweden on November 20, 2000, then in several other countries in 2002.
Kerrang! nominated it for Best Single in 2002. Q placed it at number 54 on its list of the 100 Greatest Guitar Tracks in March 2005, and Pitchfork listed it at 244 among the top 500 songs of the 2000s. The single came in several forms. The Swedish CD and the US seven-inch paired it with "Die, All Right!". One European CD added "Fever" and "Barely Homosapien", and the other carried "Uptempo Venomous Poison" and a track titled "Gninrom Ytic Kcorknup". The US and Australian CD ran to three tracks, ending with "The Hives Are Law, You Are Crime".
The band's lineup stayed unchanged from 1993 until 2013, when bassist Dr. Matt Destruction retired for health reasons. Johan Gustafsson, known in the Hives as The Johan and Only and the bassist for Randy, took his place.
