By the end of 1995, "Hold My Hand" stood at No. 22 on the Billboard year-end chart. All four members of Hootie & the Blowfish, Mark Bryan, Dean Felber, Darius Rucker and Jim Sonefeld, wrote it in 1989, and it appeared a year later on a self-titled cassette EP.
Atlantic Records released it in July 1994 as the band's debut single, from the album Cracked Rear View. It peaked at No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 6 on the Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks chart. David Crosby sang a backing vocal on the track. Adolfo Doring directed the video.
The band had formed in Columbia, South Carolina, in 1986. Cracked Rear View became one of the best-selling albums in the United States, certified platinum 22 times. "Hold My Hand" was one of three top-10 singles from the era, along with "Let Her Cry" in 1994 and "Only Wanna Be with You" in 1995. The band has had three number-one singles in Canada.
