Holy Diver

In March 2023, Rolling Stone ranked "Holy Diver" as the 9th greatest metal song of all time, more than forty years after the American heavy metal band Dio first released it. The single came out in August 1983 as the lead track from their debut album of the same name. It reached number 40 on the Mainstream Rock chart at the time, yet grew into one of Dio's most popular songs.

Ronnie James Dio, who had fronted Rainbow and Black Sabbath before forming his own band in 1982, said the lyrics describe a Christ figure on another planet who sacrifices himself to redeem his people. When those people learn he intends to leave and save others on different planets, they selfishly ask him to stay. The music video, directed and edited by Arthur Ellis, cast Dio as a sword-wielding barbarian exploring the recently burnt-out St Mark's Church in Silvertown, east London, now a music venue. There he fights a shrouded figure and turns him and his hobgoblin servants into rats, later catching a newly forged sword from a blacksmith before encountering three hooded prisoners, the third of which raises a head with cat-like eyes.

Killswitch Engage recorded a cover, first made for the Kerrang! compilation High Voltage!: A Brief History of Rock and later re-released on the special edition of As Daylight Dies. Their version appeared on the 2014 compilation Ronnie James Dio This Is Your Life, and both it and the original became downloadable content for Rocksmith 2014.
