Alex Van Halen's double bass drum performance drives "Hot for Teacher". Unusually for a single, it begins with a 30-second drum solo, followed by another 30 seconds of instrumental introduction. Producer Ted Templeman originally attributed the intro to a Lamborghini exhaust, while others thought a drum sequencer was involved. A breakdown video by Drumeo concluded it was built on an electronically triggered Simmons kit. For the first six bars Alex plays rudiments such as hertas and paradiddles on a Simmons pad, then adds triggered double bass and rototoms.
Van Halen released it in October 1984 as the fourth and final single from the album 1984, the last single of the band's 1974 to 1985 era. The band members all share the writing credit. The ending comes from a studio demo from the club days called "Voodoo Queen".
The video was filmed at John Marshall High School. Phil Hartman voiced Waldo, an awkward boy in a bow tie put on the school bus by his mother, and Roth played the bus driver. At the end, the kids have grown up, with Alex a gynecologist, Michael Anthony a sumo wrestler, and Eddie a psychiatric hospital patient.
Hot for Teacher runs at 127 BPM, the tempo of house, disco and most club dance music. In classical terms it sits in allegro territory. A bar of 4/4 lasts 1.89 seconds, and a quarter-note delay is 472 ms. It is in D major, Camelot 10B, which shares its notes with B minor and mixes cleanly with G major and A major.
