In 1982 the Pointer Sisters were putting together their album So Excited!, and "I'm So Excited" grew out of those sessions. The three sisters wrote and composed the song together with Trevor Lawrence, and it came out as a single in September 1982 after appearing on the album. It reached number 30 on the US Billboard Hot 100, number 28 on the Dance Music/Club Play Singles chart, and number 46 on the R&B Singles chart.

Two years later the group gave the song a second life. A slightly remixed and edited version was included on Break Out, an RIAA certified multi-Platinum album, and re-released as a single in July 1984. That time it climbed to number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 and reached number 25 on the Adult Contemporary chart. In March 2001 the RIAA and National Endowment for the Arts placed it at number 264 on their Songs of the Century list, a project meant to promote a better understanding of America's musical and cultural heritage.

A music video accompanied the single, directed by choreographer Kenny Ortega. It showed the sisters preparing for a formal party at a high society club. Anita Pointer dressed and applied makeup, Ruth Pointer rolled around her bed in a nightgown throwing her garments about, and June Pointer took a bubble bath. When they arrived at the club they were photographed by other party goers, and by the video's end they had the whole club on its feet. Dorian Harewood also appeared in the clip.

I'm So Excited runs at 184 BPM, the tempo of fast punk, speed metal and hardcore. In classical terms it sits in presto territory. A bar of 4/4 lasts 1.3 seconds, and a quarter-note delay is 326 ms. It is in G minor, Camelot 6A, which shares its notes with Bb major and mixes cleanly with C minor and D minor.
