Jason Mraz first put down "I'm Yours" as a demo in 2005, when the track appeared on a limited edition EP called Extra Credit that promoted his second studio album, Mr. A–Z. Before that recording, the American singer-songwriter had been playing the song at his 2004 and 2005 gigs, where it had already become a crowd favorite. Three years later it was released as the first single from his third studio album, We Sing. We Dance. We Steal Things.
The song built slowly in the United States. It peaked at number six on the Billboard Hot 100 and spent 76 weeks on that chart, breaking the previous record of 69 weeks held by LeAnn Rimes' "How Do I Live". It took ten months after release to reach number one on the Mainstream Top 40, and it topped the Billboard Hot Adult Top 40 Tracks chart for nine weeks. Mraz launched the single at Michele Clark's Sunset Sessions at the La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, California, in 2008.
Elsewhere the song reached number one in Sweden, Norway, New Zealand and Australia, and climbed to number 11 on the UK Singles Chart. At the 51st Grammy Awards it was nominated for Song of the Year and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. Mraz also sang a version on Sesame Street titled "Outdoors", and a remixed version featuring Lil Wayne and Jah Cure was released.
