In April 1977, the Jam released their first single, "In the City", taken from their debut studio album of the same title. It reached No. 40 on the UK Singles Chart that May, becoming the band's first Top 40 entry and the start of a run of 18 consecutive Top 40 singles. Although the album itself fared poorly on the UK Albums Chart, the single gave British audiences their first taste of the band and set the pattern for Paul Weller's early mod-influenced celebrations of British youth.
The song stayed close to Weller's youth anthems, which dominated the Jam's early output. Pitchfork Media later ranked it among the great debut singles.
In May 2002, Polydor marked the 25th anniversary of the Jam's recording debut by re-releasing the single in its original packaging, on 7" vinyl, at its original price of 75 pence. The limited pressing sold out immediately, and the song returned to the Top 40, peaking at No. 36. That placed it higher than the original release and two subsequent reissues had managed, and only Graham Coxon's "Freakin' Out" has since charted in the UK Top 40 on limited edition 7" sales alone.
