"Iron Man" began as a science fiction story dreamed up by bassist Geezer Butler, who wrote the lyrics for Black Sabbath's 1970 album Paranoid. The title came from a remark Ozzy Osbourne made about an "iron bloke", and Butler built the tale from there: a man travels to the future, sees the apocalypse, and returns to warn humanity, only to be turned into steel by a magnetic field. Ridiculed and ignored by the people he meant to save, he takes revenge by causing the very destruction he witnessed. Butler insisted the song had no connection to the Marvel Comics superhero, having never read American comics as a child. Raised in a devout Catholic family, he also intended the character as an allegory for Jesus Christ, though one who seeks vengeance rather than forgiving his tormentors. He drew further inspiration from H. G. Wells's novels and the Hammer horror films of the 1960s.
Recording posed its own problems. Producer Rodger Bain and engineer Tom Allom struggled to capture the power and depth of Bill Ward's bass drum, hampered by the limited microphones of the era. Some sources claim Osbourne spoke the opening line "I am Iron Man" into a metal fan, though others dispute this as unlikely.
The song peaked at number 52 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1972, the band's highest-charting single there, and a live version from Reunion (1998) later won a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance.
