Stephan Jenkins wanted a thud in the drums when Third Eye Blind cut "Jumper." He wanted thickness in the midrange, so the drums went into a smaller room with the doors open. He gave drummer Brad Hargreaves, who usually played big sticks, a pair of small ones, set the riser in the middle of the room and used no reverb, as he put it, like a Beatles thing.

The song was recorded and mixed in and around San Francisco at Toast Studios, Skywalker Ranch, H.O.S. and The Site. Jenkins wrote and produced it, with additional production and the mix by Eric Valentine. Ted Jensen mastered it at Sterling Sound in New York City.

The lyrics grew out of the suicide of a bullied gay teenager, a friend of band manager Eric Godtland who died while in high school. Jenkins added his own alienating childhood and said the broader point was compassion for one another. Elektra released it on August 4, 1998, as the fifth and last single from the band's debut album. It entered the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 16 that December and peaked at No. 5 on January 30, 1999, after 20 weeks on the chart.

Jumper runs at 91 BPM, the tempo of hip-hop, R&B and reggaeton. In classical terms it sits in andante territory. A bar of 4/4 lasts 2.64 seconds, and a quarter-note delay is 659 ms. It is in C major, Camelot 8B, which shares its notes with A minor and mixes cleanly with F major and G major.
