Kevin Cronin walked into rehearsal and sat down at the piano, which he rarely plays since he is a guitar player. He started playing "Keep On Loving You," and the rest of REO Speedwagon looked at him as if he were from another planet. They told him it was not an REO Speedwagon song. Cronin answered that as the main songwriter, anything he wrote was one. It was the band's job to turn it into one. Then Gary Richrath plugged in his guitar and played power chords over it. Cronin had thought the song sounded too much like Barry Manilow, and he now saw the original version was too sweet.
He wrote it after learning his wife had cheated on him. Epic Records did not think it was good enough to release as a single. The band persuaded the label to. It appeared on the 1980 album Hi Infidelity, reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for one week in March 1981 and was certified platinum. It peaked at number seven in the UK.
The video was the 17th played on MTV's first day, August 1, 1981. It opens with Cronin talking about his relationship troubles with a female psychiatrist.
Keep On Loving You runs at 174 BPM, the tempo of drum and bass and jungle. In classical terms it sits in vivace territory. A bar of 4/4 lasts 1.38 seconds, and a quarter-note delay is 345 ms.
