Kiss Me

Matt Slocum wrote "Kiss Me" in a Dutch motel room while Sixpence None the Richer were on tour in the Netherlands. Lead vocalist Leigh Nash recalled that the band had been in their rooms for about an hour when Slocum called to say he had finished a new song. That night the group had a show at Flevo Festival, and Nash went down to his room, learned the melody, and performed it with the band before the day was out. The tune was an instant hit with fans, yet another year and a half passed before the band finally recorded it for their self-titled third album.

The bandmates were hesitant about the track. Its lighthearted, poppier sound marked a departure from their earlier work, and they resisted putting it on the album until their producer talked them around. Early drafts also carried darker words, with "silver moon sparkling" originally written as "cigarettes sparkling." Matt Slocum's song became the record's lead single, arriving at US modern rock radio on July 14, 1998.

Commercial success arrived slowly. The single first touched the Billboard Hot 100 at number 90 in late November 1998, dropped off the chart, and then reentered in February 1999 after Miramax used it as the theme for the teen romantic comedy She's All That. It climbed for another 11 weeks to reach number two on May 1, its peak, and spent 33 weeks on the chart altogether. By the end of the year it was the United States' sixth-best-selling single of 1999, and it had also reached number one in Australia and Canada.
