Recording of "Lay All Your Love on Me" began at Polar Music Studios in Stockholm on 9 September 1980, with the final mix completed a month later on 10 October. The song, written by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus for ABBA's album Super Trouper, featured Agnetha Fältskog on lead vocals. One of its most distinctive touches, a descending vocal effect at the end of the verse before the refrain, was created by feeding the vocal through a harmoniser that produced a slightly lower-pitched copy of itself, the output looping back to the input so the pitch dropped continually.

Andersson and Ulvaeus thought the chorus sounded like a hymn, so parts of the chorus vocals were run through a vocoder to imitate a church congregation singing slightly out of tune. Polar Music never planned the track as a single, but a remix by Raul A. Rodriguez, also known as C.O.D of Disconet, caught on in nightclubs and topped the US Billboard Dance Club Songs chart alongside "Super Trouper" and "On and On and On". That club success pushed the label to release the song on 10 July 1981, in selected territories and only as a 12-inch single.

It reached number seven on the UK singles chart and became the first song to make the British top ten on 12-inch sales alone, at that point the best-selling 12-inch single in history. No promotional video was filmed, so Epic assembled one for £3,500 from clips of six earlier ABBA videos, though managers decided it was never needed on television.

Lay All Your Love on Me runs at 136 BPM, the tempo of techno, trance and big-room dance. In classical terms it sits in allegro territory. A bar of 4/4 lasts 1.76 seconds, and a quarter-note delay is 441 ms. It is in D minor, Camelot 7A, which shares its notes with F major and mixes cleanly with G minor and A minor.
