Jay Kay wrote "Little L" with Toby Smith, drawing on the end of his relationship with Denise van Outen. The break-up came from conflicting work commitments and contributed to Kay's cocaine problem, and that turmoil fed directly into the song.
"Little L" opened Jamiroquai's fifth studio album, A Funk Odyssey, released in 2001. It came out as the lead single on 8 August 2001 in Japan and 13 August in the United Kingdom.
