"Lonely Is the Night" was never a US single. It still became a rock radio hit. Billy Squier put it first on side two of Don't Say No in 1981, and it climbed to number 28 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. In the UK it turned up only as the B-side on pressings of "In the Dark".
Then Hammer of the Gods, the Led Zeppelin biography, mentioned the song, somewhat tongue in cheek, as one of the best singles Zeppelin ever put out. The joke was about a resemblance. The intro sounds like "Nobody's Fault but Mine", and the chorus is nearly identical to "Good Times, Bad Times". The book does not say which Zeppelin song it means.
Led Zeppelin had split up a year before the record came out, after drummer John Bonham's death. Squier, an American rock singer and guitarist, was in the middle of the run that took Don't Say No to triple platinum. In 2013 the song was added to Los Santos Rock Radio, the fictional station in Grand Theft Auto V.
Lonely Is The Night runs at 86 BPM, the tempo of boom-bap hip-hop, reggae and slow R&B. In classical terms it sits in andante territory. A bar of 4/4 lasts 2.79 seconds, and a quarter-note delay is 698 ms. It is in E major, Camelot 12B, which shares its notes with C# minor and mixes cleanly with A major and B major.
