When Mutt Lange first brought "Love Bites" to Def Leppard, it was a country ballad. The band thought it sounded like nothing they had done before. They added power rock elements and emotive backing vocals like those on R&B ballads of the time. The title had belonged to a very different song, which was eventually renamed "I Wanna Be Your Hero". That one ended up as a B-side to a Hysteria single and later appeared on Retro Active.
The power ballad came from the 1987 album Hysteria and was released in August 1988, after "Pour Some Sugar on Me". In October it spent one week at the top of the US Billboard Hot 100, the band's only number one single there. It reached number two in New Zealand, number three in Canada, number seven in Ireland and number eleven in the United Kingdom. The 45 in Canada and the UK came in a limited edition gatefold with the complete Hysteria lyrics, the only official release of them.
In August 2026, the song played in the extended look for Grand Theft Auto VI, as Lucia Caminos asks Jason Duval which dress to wear to go out.
Love Bites runs at 65 BPM, the tempo of slow ballads, ambient and downtempo. In classical terms it sits in largo territory. A bar of 4/4 lasts 3.69 seconds, and a quarter-note delay is 923 ms. It is in Bb minor, Camelot 3A, which shares its notes with Db major and mixes cleanly with Eb minor and F minor.
