C. J. Snare wrote "Love of a Lifetime" while playing solo gigs at a Holiday Inn. When the American rock band FireHouse brought demos for their first album to Epic Records, the label felt it needed a stronger ballad. Snare remembered raising his hand sheepishly and saying he had a song, so they played it for the label. The label loved it. Guitarist Bill Leverty shared the writing credit.
It became the band's third single and its highest charting one in the United States. It entered the Billboard Hot 100 on June 29, 1991, at number 81 and peaked at number 5 the week of September 28, 1991. It was also the band's first and most popular power ballad.
FireHouse is most known for the song. It has been used as a first dance song at countless weddings. In a 2005 interview, Snare said that there was not a show where people did not come up to the band to say they had married to that song.
