By 1989 the Cure had reached their eighth studio album, Disintegration, and "Lovesong" was its third single, released on August 21. Robert Smith had written it for his long-time girlfriend Mary, then his fiancée, as a wedding present. The track is more upbeat than the rest of the album. Smith said it was an open show of emotion that was not trying to be clever, and that it had taken him ten years to feel comfortable singing a straightforward love song.

In the United States it reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100 in October 1989. That made it the band's only top-ten entry there. It also reached number two on the Modern Rock Tracks chart and number 18 in the UK. The single mix has extra reverb and harmonies on Smith's vocals. The video shows the band playing inside a cave.

Nobody settled on one spelling of the title. The album's original artwork has "Love Song" on the track listing and "Lovesong" on the lyrics sheet. The single's cover reads "Lovesong" while the disc itself says "Love Song". Later covers include 311's version for 50 First Dates and Adele's on her 2011 album 21.

Lovesong runs at 140 BPM, the tempo of dubstep and trap counted in half time, and hardstyle. In classical terms it sits in allegro territory. A bar of 4/4 lasts 1.71 seconds, and a quarter-note delay is 429 ms. It is in A minor, Camelot 8A, which shares its notes with C major and mixes cleanly with D minor and E minor.
