Shawn Mortensen directed the video for "Machinehead," shooting in London and Portsmouth. Sections of Shepherd's Bush, where the members of Bush used to live, can be seen in it, and Gavin Rossdale's dog Winston appears too.

The song was released in 1996 as the fifth and final single from Sixteen Stone, the band's 1994 debut album. It reached No. 43 on the Billboard Hot 100 on May 4, 1996, and No. 4 on both the Modern Rock Tracks and Mainstream Rock Tracks charts. Its video lost the Best Video from a Film nomination at the 1996 MTV Music Video Awards, but the song won the MTV Movie Award for Best Song from a Movie.

The formats varied by country. The US CD single ran 4:20 and added an acoustic "Comedown" and a 44-second "X-Girlfriend." The UK limited-edition CD paired it with "Bud" and "Solomon's Bones," while the UK 10-inch vinyl carried the acoustic "Comedown" and "Solomon's Bones."

Machinehead runs at 89 BPM, the tempo of boom-bap hip-hop, reggae and slow R&B. In classical terms it sits in andante territory. A bar of 4/4 lasts 2.7 seconds, and a quarter-note delay is 674 ms. It is in A major, Camelot 11B, which shares its notes with F# minor and mixes cleanly with D major and E major.
