Bob Mould wrote "Makes No Sense at All" as a statement of ambition. He later said it summed up all he wanted as a songwriter then. He asked himself how to keep working a pessimistic outlook, how bright the ribbon could be on a dark package, and how far he could take it. The song showed Hüsker Dü moving further from their hardcore punk roots toward a melodic, pop-influenced sound.

Mould called it a super simple song, one that he still played every night. He counted it among the handful in his catalog that he never tired of playing, and he said audiences never tired of singing it back. He described it as the song the band would play if they knew only seven minutes remained before the missiles fell.

It was the only single from Flip Your Wig, and it reached number 2 on the UK indie charts. The B-side was a cover of "Love Is All Around", the theme from The Mary Tyler Moore Show. Both songs got videos with clips of the band and shots of Minneapolis. In the second, the band recreated scenes from the show's opening credits, including leaving Dayton's, riding the escalator and eating at the IDS Center.

Makes No Sense at All runs at 160 BPM, the tempo of footwork, gabber and fast metal. In classical terms it sits in vivace territory. A bar of 4/4 lasts 1.5 seconds, and a quarter-note delay is 375 ms. It is in G major, Camelot 9B, which shares its notes with E minor and mixes cleanly with C major and D major.
