My Own Summer (Shove It)

Abe Cunningham's drum part opened "My Own Summer (Shove It)" with a simple tom-to-snare fill, played on a kit described as bone-dry, with a popping snare and a distinct 10-inch tom. The American alternative metal band Deftones released the track through Maverick Records in November 1997 as the first single from their second album, Around the Fur. It reached No. 29 on the UK singles chart and No. 33 on the Scottish Singles Chart in 1998, marking the first time the group had charted a single. Decades later, the British Phonographic Industry certified it silver in 2023, and the Recording Industry Association of America awarded it 2× Platinum in 2025.

The song was built on Stephen Carpenter's central riff, described as dark, rolling and progressively more forceful. Chino Moreno's vocals shifted between restrained and intense delivery, moving from whispered lines layered with distortion to sudden outbursts. Critics repeatedly framed the track around its quiet and loud contrasts, with writers in Kerrang! and Rolling Stone both singling out its tension building.

Dean Karr directed the music video, filmed at Lake Piru in Los Angeles. The band performed on shark cages in the lake, with mechanical sharks on set, while Karr later traveled to Australia to film real sharks, returning from a fruitless week and a half only to be granted an extra trip. Bassist Chi Cheng fell off one of the cages during shooting, an accident that left his dreadlocks with a strong odor for a week.
