Never Ever

After the success of their debut single "I Know Where It's At", All Saints turned to recording their first full-length studio album. "Never Ever", written by group member Shaznay Lewis with co-writers Robert Jazayeri and Sean Mather, was released on 10 November 1997 as the second single from that debut album. Lewis wrote the song after splitting up with a boyfriend, though the music conveyed the impression that all would be well. The track topped the charts in the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand, and as of June 2019 it ranked as the third-best-selling single by a girl group in the UK.

The road to its release was bumpy. Soon after the group signed with London Records, Lewis discovered that her bandmates, Melanie Blatt and the sisters Nicole and Natalie Appleton, had played the label head a tape of vocals they had recorded without her. It was their version of "Never Ever" that made him pay attention, and Lewis admitted the episode felt low, pushing her to keep writing to secure her place. The group flew to the United States to record, with vocals cut in Washington, D.C., except for the intro, which was captured at Battery Studios in London and kept from the original demo because the mood could not be replicated.

The song later won British Single of the Year and British Video of the Year at the 1998 Brit Awards. Two videos were made, one for Europe and Australia showing the group near a swimming pool and in their homes, and a North American version set in a church. In the United States, it peaked at number four on the Billboard Hot 100, the group's highest position there.
