Our House

Graham Nash wrote "Our House" in an hour, sitting at Joni Mitchell's piano while she was out in the garden picking flowers. The moment behind it was ordinary. He and Mitchell had been to breakfast at Art's Deli on Ventura Boulevard, and on the way back to her car they passed an antique store where she spotted a vase she wanted. Nash persuaded her to buy it, and once they reached her house in Laurel Canyon on a grey, drizzly Los Angeles morning, he offered to light a fire while she put flowers in the vase. With Mitchell occupied in the garden, Nash took her place at the piano and the song came out of that single morning.

Nash was living with Mitchell, along with her two cats, while recording both the Crosby, Stills & Nash album and Déjà Vu, and "Our House" appeared on the latter, released in 1970 by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. The single reached No. 30 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and No. 20 on the Cash Box Top 100. In a 2013 interview with Terry Gross on NPR's Fresh Air, Nash described the harmonies as himself, David Crosby and Stephen Stills doing their best, noting that the three of them came from such different musical backgrounds that it was not supposed to work, yet somehow did.

Nash later admitted he was bored with "Our House" the day after he recorded it, though he still plays it occasionally because it means so much to so many people. An official music video, directed and animated by Jeff Scher, was published on the group's YouTube channel on June 9, 2021.
