After being fired from Black Sabbath early in 1979, Ozzy Osbourne formed his own band that November, recruiting guitarist Randy Rhoads, bassist Bob Daisley and drummer Lee Kerslake. It was this lineup that wrote "Over the Mountain", with Osbourne sharing the writing credit with Rhoads, Daisley and Kerslake. The track opened his second studio album, Diary of a Madman, and debuted at number 42 on the Billboard Top Tracks chart before reaching number 38.
Although the group behind Osbourne was often not recognised as a formal entity and went through frequent personnel changes, it was generally referred to simply as the Ozzy Osbourne Band, having initially been known as Blizzard of Ozz. Until 2020, Osbourne's touring band always performed on his albums, after which his records instead featured an array of session musicians.
"Over the Mountain" resurfaced on three of Osbourne's compilation albums. It appeared on The Ozzman Cometh on 11 November 1997, on The Essential Ozzy Osbourne on 11 February 2003, and on the four-disc Prince of Darkness on 22 March 2005. The song thus remained in circulation across more than two decades of Osbourne's catalogue, long after the Diary of a Madman sessions that had first produced it.
