Caddillac Tah wrote the verse that Vita performed on "Put It on Me," the second single from Ja Rule's 2000 album Rule 3:36. The track, released in January 2001 through Def Jam and Murder Inc. Records, originally featured only Ja Rule and Vita before a remixed version was recorded with new vocals from singer Lil' Mo. Ja Rule said the lyrics came from an argument he had with his wife, written to show how important she is to him.
The song appeared on The Fast and the Furious soundtrack in 2001 and later landed on the special edition of Ja Rule's album Pain Is Love. It peaked at number eight on the US Billboard Hot 100 for the week of March 19, 2001, giving Ja Rule his first top-10 hit on that chart.
The music video found success of its own. In 2001 it became the first video to retire from BET's 106 & Park countdown after spending more than 60 days on the show, and it also topped BET's Notarized: Top 100 Videos of 2001. A nomination for Best Rap Video followed at the 2001 MTV VMAs that September. In 2002 the song won BMI Awards in both the Urban Music and Pop Music categories, and it picked up an ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Music Award, with Murder Inc. executive Irv Gotti also receiving an honorary Songwriter of the Year honor.
